The UK Graduate Route in 2026: still the cleanest post-study work scheme for Pakistani students

Two years after dependant restrictions and four years after launch, the UK Graduate Route remains the smartest post-study work scheme in Europe for Pakistani master's graduates. Here is what it does, what it doesn't, and how to convert it into a Skilled Worker visa.

When the UK launched the Graduate Route in July 2021, it was almost too good to be true. Two years of unrestricted post-study work for anyone who completes a UK degree, no sponsor required, no salary minimum, no job offer needed at the time of application. Four years on, despite review threats, dependant restrictions, and political noise around international students, the route is still here and still the cleanest post-study work scheme in Europe for Pakistani master's graduates. Here is what you actually get and how to convert it into a long-term UK future.

What the Graduate Route gives you

Two years of unrestricted work in the UK for graduates at Bachelor's, Master's, or other Level 6/7 qualifications. Three years for PhD graduates. You apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires. No employer sponsorship required. You can work in any role for any employer, including self-employment and starting a UK company. The £719 application fee plus £1,035/year IHS makes the total cost about £2,754 for two years.

What it doesn't give you: any path to ILR on its own. The Graduate Route is a bridge, not a destination. You must convert it into a Skilled Worker visa, Innovator Founder visa, or Spouse visa before it expires if you want to stay long term.

Why it matters for Pakistani master's students

For Pakistani master's graduates of UK universities, the Graduate Route is the cleanest job-search window in any developed country. Compare:

  • UK Graduate Route: 2 years unrestricted, any role, any salary, from in-country.
  • Germany Chancenkarte for graduates: 18 months post-study, conditions on salary at conversion.
  • Netherlands Orientation Year: 12 months unrestricted, must be applied for within 3 years of graduation.
  • Australia Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate: 2–3 years post-study work rights for international graduates of CRICOS institutions, lodged within 6 months of course completion.
  • Ireland Stamp 1G: 12-24 months depending on degree level, similar unrestricted basis.

The UK's two-year window is the longest. The unrestricted nature of it means a Pakistani master's graduate can spend the first six months in junior consulting, the next six months upskilling, then negotiate from a stronger position at a senior role that meets the Skilled Worker £38,700 going rate. Nobody else in Europe gives you this much breathing room.

Converting to Skilled Worker

The standard transition: find a UK employer with a sponsor licence, secure an offer at the going rate for your SOC 2020 code, file Skilled Worker in-country before your Graduate Route expires. Two crucial features for recent graduates:

  1. New-entrant salary discount: if you finished your degree within the previous 2 years and you're under 26, you qualify for the new-entrant rate of 70% of the going rate plus the £30,960 floor. So a job whose standard going rate is £40,000 only needs to pay £30,960 to clear the threshold under new-entrant rules.
  2. PhD relevance discount: PhD graduates whose qualification is relevant to the role qualify for 90% of going rate via Option D, or 80% via Option E for STEM PhDs. These options give significant flexibility on starting salary.

The Skilled Worker visa runs 5 years, after which you apply for ILR. The Graduate Route time does not count toward ILR; only Skilled Worker time does.

Common mistakes Pakistani Graduate Route holders make

Three patterns I've seen repeatedly:

  1. Taking the first available job at minimum wage and not negotiating the Skilled Worker going rate. Your Graduate Route gives you 24 months to find a role that clears the threshold. Don't burn it on a £24,000 retail role you could have done as a student.
  2. Assuming the Graduate Route extends if you can't find a Skilled Worker offer. It doesn't. The two years are firm. You leave the UK when it expires unless you've converted.
  3. Filing the Skilled Worker switch the week before Graduate Route expires. Allow 3-4 months runway, because if there's a Home Office delay you have backup time before the Graduate Route runs out.

Practical tips for the 24 months

Apply for the Graduate Route immediately when your degree is awarded, ideally within 2 weeks of receiving the results letter. The application is filed online, takes 8 weeks for standard processing, costs about £2,754 total. While the application is pending, you can continue working under your Student visa conditions (20 hours/week term-time, full-time during vacations).

Use the first 6 months for serious job-hunting against Skilled Worker thresholds. Target sponsoring employers on the public register. Apply broadly. Take a temp role at a sponsoring company if needed; many UK firms convert temp staff into sponsored hires after 6-12 months of performance.

By month 18, you should have a sponsored offer in hand. By month 22, you should have submitted the Skilled Worker switch application. By month 24, your Skilled Worker visa should be in effect, and the 5-year ILR clock has started.
